I am a sailor, teacher, and parent who has recently created an educational website ( and published a book entitled "Lesson Plans Ahoy: Hands-on learning for sailing children and home-schooling sailors."

Whether you are setting off on a short cruise or a longer adventure, this book provides you with enjoyable learning units that keeps kids engaged and connected. Lesson Plans Ahoy! includes six detailed units in Science, Mathematics, History, and Physical Education, including the following topics:

Earth and Space Science: study the lunar cycle and eclipses
Biology: dissect a fish
Data Management: graph water consumption
Measurement: understand area and capacity
The Voyages of Christopher Columbus
Heart Rate and Exercise

Each unit includes information on:
Materials required (selected for practicality on a boat)
Age-appropriate adaptations (ages 4-12 in detail)
Activities and assignments children will enjoy doing
Tips for cross-curricular links and enrichment
Suggested resources to support learning

An appendix links science and mathematics units to national and state curricula for ages 4-12 from the United States, Canada, Australia, and the UK so that home schooling students can keep pace with expectations in their home systems.
