All hands--

The Admiral and I are planning our first cruise up the Rideau Canal Waterway in June, thus, I'm starting to collect links to informative sites and blogs. Here's what I've found so far in personal accounts of a Rideau transit:

Here are links and comments from subscribers to the popular Great Loop List at TrawlersAndTrawlering.com:

Our blog at www.seguevoyage.blogspot.com includes the Rideau during 2008.

http://tomclare.com/2003/Log/Canada-Log.htm includes Rideau portion of Champlain triangle cruise of 2003- maybe a little out of date. If they still have Wed. night at Fort Henry, Kingston, don't miss.
Have a great cruise. Of our 17,000 miles of criusing since 2003, the Rideau is still my favorite.

We did the Rideau in 2005, great side-trip. Our goal was Ottawa for Canada Day, July 1, and it was a good choice. Tie up on the wall in front of Parliament and enjoy the parades, parties and fireworks. Took us about two weeks for a round trip from Kingston as we did not want to deal with the St. Lawrence locks.
A good link is http://www.rideaufriends.com . Plenty of free info and charts.
Virtually all of the locks are parklike and perfect for overnight, although hydro (electric) is rare. There are some nice towns, notably Smiths Falls, Merrickville. The history and quaintness factor are awesome. We met many English and French speaking locals who spend their entire summer on the canal, moving a lock or so every few days.

We cruised the Rideau on our loop trip in 2007. We have a daily blog http://www.treadnwater.blogspot.com . Check archives July and August 2007. We came in from Montreal to Kingston. Great trip, but very narrow and shallow in a number of spots.

Here's a message I received from Larry Ropka who, with his wife, Joan, converted a 42-foot lobster-boat hull into a liveaboard cruising yacht:

You are in for a treat. Not only is the canal beautiful and the towns along the way charming but the lock staffs are marvelously accommodating. None of my relatives treat me that good.

Not many words but pictures at http://www.picasaweb.google.com/lropka. Look into albums Kingston-Westport and Westport-Ottawa. A few words at http://www.charisways.blogspot.com.

Be certain to get the "Ports Guide" for the Rideau. A fine guide.

We took 18 days and if I had to do it over would take more. Allow a minimum of 3-4 days in Ottawa. A charming city.

Another must-do is dining at Chez Piggy in Kingston.

Email received from John and Judy Gill:

One of our favorite stops on the Rideau Waterway was our overnight stop at Chaffeys Lock. Arrived at the lower side of the lock at 12:30 and ate our lunch in the park adjacent to the Parks Canada wall where we are tied up for the night. We had a great dinner at the Opinicon Resort restaurant about a block away from the lock. This resort is a page out of the "past" old resort hotels that shouldn't be missed.

You can read our logs on our website (address below) under year one, beginning with July 1st in Ottawa.

Note the great farmer's market a couple of blocks from the top of the ladder locks going into Ottawa.

Here's a boat blog from a couple on a Cruiser 455 who came up the Champlain system to Montreal and then Ottawa before heading south on the Rideau:

Check our web site http://www.treadnwater.com for our day by day cruise in 2007. It should be late July and August dates.
